(ARC Review) Delirium by Lauren Oliver

DELIRIUM
Author: Lauren Oliver
Source: Around The World Tours
  • Reading level: Young Adult
  • Hardcover: 320 pages
  • Publisher: HarperCollins (February 1, 2011)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0061726826
  • ISBN-13: 978-0061726828
SYNOPSIS:

Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing. They didn’t understand that one love -the deliria- blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the governments demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Holway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy. But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love.

MY THOUGHTS:
I loved the author's first book, Before I Fall.  I was so excited to be picked to be on this tour because I couldn't wait to see what this author could bring to us to follow the first amazing novel.  I have to say though, that I am going to be in the minority with this book.  I wasn't a huge fan of it.

It is set in the future where society believes that love is a sickness. All those diseases like hypertension, stress, and depression are all symptoms of the true disease.  They have found a way to rid the population of this disease at age 18.  At eighteen you are required to undergo the treatment  to remove love from your life.  Arranged marriages are the norm and anyone who refuses to have the disease removed becomes marked for termination.  I couldn't bring myself to care about Lena.  She always wanted to please everyone and be the good girl.  I wanted her to wake up and realize that what they were doing is wrong and listen to her gut!  Also, how are your suppose to have a successful marriage and family without love?  That is basic nature!

While the writing was beautiful, I thought the execution of the story was not.  I liked the book, but I am not a huge fan of the book.

MY RATING:

Okay book, but it left me wanting more! 3 STARS

I wondered about this one. I've mixed feelings about Dystopian books. I think it certainly sounds interesting though so I'll probably wait until this one is released to read it (and not try to get on tours, etc). Thanks for the honest review!

I also loved Before I Fall so I was really excited for this. I guess I'll make sure to not keep my expectations too high. Thanks for your honest review.

Thanks for being honest. I'll still be picking it up, although I haven't read Before I Fall yet.

I just read this from the same tour site. Thanks for the review. I really didn't enjoy Before I Fall all that much so I was a bit leery about reading this but wanted to give the author another try. I really enjoyed this book, so much more than her first. I'm glad she writes such different topics though, to truly appeal to a wide audience. Good review!
