Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

MOCKINGJAY
Book Three in the Hunger Games Series
Author: Suzanne Collins
Source: Purchased

Reading level: Young Adult
Hardcover: 400 pages
Publisher: Scholastic Press; 1 edition (August 24, 2010)

SUMMARY:

Young Katniss Everdeen has survived the dreaded Hunger Games not once, but twice, but even now she can find no relief. In fact, the dangers seem to be escalating: President Snow has declared an all-out war on Katniss, her family, her friends, and all the oppressed people of District 12. The thrill-packed final installment of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy will keep young hearts pounding.

MY THOUGHTS:

I actually finished this book a day before posting this review.  I couldn't bring myself to write and post the review of this book right away because of the effect this book had on me.  I went through anger, sadness, awe, and even more heartbreak.  I literally had to step away from this book several times while reading it because I was so overcome with emotions. This has not happened in a long time when reading a book for me.

After the ending of Catching Fire, I was heartbroken.  Yet, with Mockingjay, I was to the point of depression at the end of it.  The author didn't fail in the action department, even if it did feel a little rushed near the end.  I could not believe the author sacrificed some characters in this book as well that I had grown to love.  I was literally in tears with an empty box of tissues by the end of the book.  I did not want to accept the deaths of beloved characters.  I also did not want the series to end.  The epilogue was beautiful, yet it was not the way I wanted it to end.  I wanted more!  I wanted to know what life brings to the rest of the characters that still lived!  For such an amazing trilogy that was a roller coaster of emotions, I wanted the ending to be more.  It was like the author was slow at the beginning and it built up to this big finale, but she lost the spark at the end of Mockingjay.

Even though I never had much interest in reading this series, I am so glad I did.  I can personally say that this is one of the top series I have ever read.  I didn't sleep much, my house is in shambles from not cleaning, and I might have lost a few pounds from not taking a break to eat and from the emotional ride it took me on.  If you have been hesitant in reading this series like I was, don't be!  You will not be disappointed!

MY RATING:

Outstanding Book That Will Stay On My Bookshelf
For Rereading! 5 STARS

I agree about the depression part... but I wasn't crazy about this book. It was disappointing after the first two great stories. It almost seemed like it had been written by a different author.

Oh, well.

I completely agree with your review! I was crying buckets when I read it and I was also kind of angry that none of the characters I loved could catch a break!!

When I finished the book I just sat there with my nook in my hand and thought "wow. I don't even know what to think." I couldn't decide whether I hated it because it was so depressing & all my favorite characters were gone or whether I liked it because it was amazingly written and the fact that the book can have such a strong hold on me is quite a testament to Collins as an author.

I thought although it may not have ended the way I wanted it to end, I think it was a fitting ending for the series.

Mockingjay was my favourite out of the three. I literally cried too in the end. It was just too much to bare, but you know it's a story that has stuck with me and will have a lasting impression.

Suzanne Collins was not afraid to venture into unknown territory in YA, discussing about the outcomes of war, what war really is and means, the destruction that war causes, and the emotions and loss that people have during these times. I just loved the whole concept of it, and I do believe it was a great conclusion to an epic YA masterpiece. I know what happened in Mockingjay wasn't what so many people had wanted, but I felt it was right, it should have ended the way it did, and it made you aware of what The Hunger Games actually meant.

My least favorite of the series, but still one of the best books I've ever read.

I felt part 3 was definitely the most exciting of the book. I was really sad about some of the deaths in the story, especially the ones that occurred right up until the end. The book moved a little slower than the first too, but was a good way to end the series.

I love the series as a whole. While I enjoyed some of Mockingjay, it's my least favorite. I couldn't believe how dark and depressing it was from the other ones. Yes Katniss and the gang live in a dark world, but this was a whole other level. It took me a bit longer to read because I had to step away from it.

I completely agree with your review. Mockingjay was just so heart breaking and beautiful at the same time! I also felt really depressed after finishing it, to the point where people asked if I was ok at school the next day. Anyway, thanks for the great review!

Ok, it's official. After reading your wonderful reviews, another blogger talking about them, my Mom, Dad and Sister all reading this series I need to put them at the top of my TBR list and read them next!

Oh I completely get it, Amy! It was such a heartstring tearing book that I was down when I finished it, plus I couldn't believe it was all over. Such a series! I'm so glad you enjoyed it, too!
